BREAK DOWN HARMFUL, BREAK DOWN BARRIERS: UNION BANK CELEBRATES EVERYDAY WOMEN FOR IWD 2022

Lagos, Nigeria March 9, 2022 – In commemoration of International Women’s Day, leading financial services provider Union Bank of Nigeria hosted an event to celebrate women who are breaking down stigma and breaking down barriers in their professional and personal lives. In keeping with the overall theme #BreakTheBiasthis year’s event was marked Alpher Stories: Breaking Down Prejudice, Breaking Down Barriers.

As an organization committed to leading the charge for inclusion and parity, Union Bank has consistently used International Women’s Day to promote impactful discourse and encourage positive action for gender equality.

The event began with an address by CEO, Emeka Okonkwo, who reaffirmed Union Bank’s commitment to a more gender-balanced world. This was followed by a panel discussion moderated by media giant, Lamide Akintobi. Panelists included Bolanle Okusanya Feyita (Funeral Services Director), Bukonla Olisa (Retired FIFA Referee), Dr. Abimbola Abolarinwa (Nigeria’s first female urologist) and Bukola Akingbade (Gaming and esports entrepreneur). The discussion focused on the need to promote inclusiveness and eliminate gender bias in male-dominated sectors.

Another highlight of the event was the inauguration of the first leaders of the Union Bank Women Empowerment Hub (Wehub), an internal network launched in 2016 to motivate, connect and provide support to women in the Bank. . Newly elected leaders will lead the implementation of impactful initiatives to make the Bank a progressive place to work.

Speaking at the event, Ogochukwu Ekezie-Ekaidem, Director of Brand and Marketing, Union Bank, said “International Women’s Day is such an important day for us at Union Bank, which is why every year we look for new ways to provide an engaging, informative and enjoyable event for our customers. While there remains there is still work to be done to foster inclusivity and foster progressive mindsets, we hope that the discussions held at the event will encourage everyone to do their part to break down stigma on a daily basis.”
